Stacking the shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews in which we talk about the books we’ve acquired (bought, received for review, borrowed from the library, etc.). Here’s what I’ve acquired in the past week:
Lets start with books I bought:
Title: My Lady Jane
Author: Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, Jodi Meadows
Genre: Historical Fiction
Publisher: HarperTeen
Publication Date: June 7th, 2016
I am a sucker for Tudor Era Historical Fiction, and I have always found Lady Jane Grey fascinating. So, when I heard that this trio of ladies had written a humorous Alternate History about Lady Jane Grey, I was sold. I preordered it and it arrived right on time. I have also convinced Cynthia to give this one a chance. So, we will be talking about it on the next episode of Shelfie! That gives me two weeks to read it. I can manage that, right?
Title: Lotus and Thorn
Author: Sarah Wilson Etienne
Genre: Sci-fi / Dystopian
Publisher: G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: June 7th, 2016
Here is another June 7th release that excited us. We won’t be featuring it on our podcast until late in July. But, I am sure it will be an awesome read. There does seem to be some confusion about whether or not this is a Fantasy novel. Reviewers have noted that is is more sci-fi than fantasy, so if you do decide to pick it up (or tune into our discussion), remember that it’s Science Fiction. 😀 Nothing wrong with that, right?
Title: The Star-Touched Queen
Author: Roshani Chokshi
Genre: Fantasy
Publisher: St. Martin’s Griffin
Publication Date: April 26th, 2016
I have been staring at The Star-Touched Queen since it came out. Every time I went into the book store I would pick it up, flip through it, and put it back. Until last weekend, when I finally took it home with me. The Reviews are a little polarizing. Some people love it where other hate it. Sarah J Maas is quoted on the cover. She calls it “dazzling”. I think that is what finally convinced me to buy it. I trust Ms. Maas. So, I’m am sure it’s fabulous!
Now for the physical ARCs:
Title: The Sun is Also a Star
Author: Nicola Yoon
Genre: Contemporary / Romance
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Publication Date: November 1st, 2016
This book was not on my radar at all before last night. I don’t read a lot of Contemporary novels. Fantasy is really more my speed. But, I went out the Barnes and Noble Trivia event and won first place. The prize pack was full of swag including this gorgeous ARC. That cover is stunning. if I had bought it, it would totally be a cover buy. 😛 I skimmed the first few pages and I can’t wait to sink my teeth into this one. She quotes Carl Sagan in Chapter 1? Sold. Expect a review soon!
Digital ARCs:
Title: The Beauty of Darkness (The Remnant Chronicles #3)
Author: Mary E. Pearson
Genre: Fantasy / Romance
Publisher: Henry Holt and Co.
Publication Date: August 2nd, 2016
I am UBER excited about this ARC. I didn’t expect to get it. And, In all fairness, I just got lucky. It was one of those situations on Netgalley where you wish for a book and then hope you get it. Not a proper request. Just a wish. A hope. Welp, my wish came true. I was chosen at random to receive a galley copy of this upcoming release. Of course, that meant I had to reread the first two in the series so I could remember what was going on. But, it was worth it. I’m halfway through The Beauty of Darkness and loving it. Expect reviews of all three book in the series in the upcoming weeks!
Title: Empire of Dust (Blood of Gods and Royals #2)
Author: Eleanor Herman
Genre: Fantasy / Historical Fiction
Publisher: Henry Holt and Co.
Publication Date: June 28th, 2016
Legacy of Kings was one of my most anticipated novels of 2015. It was also one of my biggest let downs. It wasn’t awful, but it also wasn’t great. Most people wouldn’t continue with a series they felt was “meh”. But, I finish everything. Even series I hate. And since Legacy of Kings was ok, I am willing to give Empire of Dust a chance. I can’t help but be skeptical, though. With the fast approaching release date, I am planning to read this one asap and put up an advance review.
Title: Nevernight (The Nevernight Chronicle #1)
Author: Jay Kristoff
Genre: Fantasy
Publisher: Thomas Dunne Books
Publication Date: August 9th, 2016
Disclaimer: I have not read any of Jay Kristoff’s solo work. I have only read Illuminae, which was written with Amie Kauffman. That said, I loved Illuminae and I am excited to see what his solo voice sounds like. That is my real interest in this novel. I kinda want to see what he contributed to Illuminae and what Amie contributed. Is that weird? It probably is. Oh, well. This book is also about an assassin and revenge. So, it’s gotta be good!
Have you read any of these? Or did you find a new gem at your local library or bookstore? Tell me what you are stacking your shelves with!
Oooh, I am DROOLING over your ARC of The Sun is Also a Star–I’m SO dying to get my hands on that, I can’t wait for it to be published! I’ve heard from others who’ve gotten early access to it that it’s pretty spectacular. Here’s hoping you enjoy it–I can’t wait to see your thoughts!
Great haul this week! ❤

I am really hoping I like it too. If it’s awesome, I will go back and read Everything, Everything as well. 😀

Awesome! Well, I have read Everything, Everything, and I really dug it–it was one of my top favorite reads from last year! (which is the other reason I can’t wait to get this one haha)

Of course! Now, you have to understand this was before I REALLY figured out my review style, so it’s a bit different (because it’s older haha) but you can find it here!

I like the Tudor era for books and I’ve had my eye on the Lady Jane book too! Say hi to Todd for me! Sadly I have too many bookcases to name but I’m actually giving it serious thought now! Might name each one after a Harry Potter character…Enjoy your books!

I’ve read The Star-Touched Queen and I had a lot of mixed feelings about it. I gave it 4 stars, but I think it would have been a 3.5 if I gave half ratings. The writing was beautiful, but there was a real bad case of instalove haha. I hope you enjoy it though! I’m also super jealous that you have a Nevernight ARC. I’m really excited to read that one!

Hmmm Insta-love. Not a huge fan of that. I also read a review that claimed The Star-Touched Queen didn’t pass the Bechdel test. I am gonna have to read it and find out for myself. 😀
I’m excited for Nevernight too! I am hoping it’s good.

Ahh, yeah, I can definitely see it not passing the Bechdel test. It’s a shame because the mythology and writing was stunning. I’ll definitely be interested to see what you think!!

I love when a Netgalley request you really have no hope of getting approved for comes through!
Enjoy all your wonderful books!
