From Goodreads:

The Girl of Fire and Thorns meets The Queen of the Tearling in this thrilling fantasy standalone about one girl’s unexpected rise to power.

Freya was never meant be queen. Twenty third in line to the throne, she never dreamed of a life in the palace, and would much rather research in her laboratory than participate in the intrigues of court. However, when an extravagant banquet turns deadly and the king and those closest to him are poisoned, Freya suddenly finds herself on the throne.

Freya may have escaped the massacre, but she is far from safe. The nobles don’t respect her, her councillors want to control her, and with the mystery of who killed the king still unsolved, Freya knows that a single mistake could cost her the kingdom – and her life.

Freya is determined to survive, and that means uncovering the murderers herself. Until then, she can’t trust anyone. Not her advisors. Not the king’s dashing and enigmatic illegitimate son. Not even her own father, who always wanted the best for her, but also wanted more power for himself.

As Freya’s enemies close in and her loyalties are tested, she must decide if she is ready to rule and, if so, how far she is willing to go to keep the crown.

Why we are waiting:

We here at Shelfie are on a quest to find that perfect political fantasy novel. We have tried several books in the past and most of them were not quite what we were looking for. This one promises politics, murder, mystery, and romance! Sounds to me like just the right mix of awesome.

What do you think? Are you waiting for Long May She Reign? Or is there something else you’d prefer to read? Let us know in the comments!

Oh, and if you want us to read this book on the podcast, remember to vote in The Shelfie Showdown!

Waiting on Wednesday: Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

WOW

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

24909346Title: Gemina (The Illuminae Files #2)
Author: Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Genre: Science Fiction
Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: October 18th, 2016

From Goodreads:

Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna’s social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed.

The sci-fi saga that began with the breakout bestseller Illuminae continues on board the Jump Station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of the BeiTech assault.

Hanna is the station captain’s pampered daughter; Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy’s most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and theHypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.

When an elite BeiTech strike team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station’s wormhole means the space-time continuum might be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren’t just fighting for their own survival; the fate of everyone on the Hypatia—and possibly the known universe—is in their hands.

But relax. They’ve totally got this. They hope.

Once again told through a compelling dossier of emails, IMs, classified files, transcripts, and schematics, Gemina raises the stakes of the Illuminae Files, hurling readers into an enthralling new story that will leave them breathless.

Why we are waiting:

Guys! I am such an Illuminae fan girl! I just cannot recommend that book enough. It is Space Opera at it’s finest. Now, I know that Gemina doesn’t follow the same main characters as Illuminae, but if it has the same unique formatting, I am positive that I can get past that.

This one has to be just as good, right?

Why we are waiting:

Almost all of the reviews I have read for this book are glowing. It takes the Young Adult Princess story and turns it into something dark and brutal. Who wouldn’t be interested in that?

Then I heard that the main character is based on Vlad the Impaler. So now we have a historical retelling, AND she’s a badass? Yep, I am on board 100%.

I would be willing to bet that Cynthia and I both have this one in our hands on release day and finished not long after. Especially since we will be discussing it during our first July podcast. So, don’t forget to tune in and listen to us rave about this dark beauty!
